How Students Can Engage with ASHRAE on Their Own Terms—Without Breaking the Bank

Getting involved with ASHRAE can open doors to networking, technical knowledge, and career opportunities. Unfortunately for many students, cost and accessibility feel like barriers. The good news? There are plenty of ways to effectively participate without blowing your budget. Here are some ways how:
1. Take Advantage of Reduced-Fee Student Membership
ASHRAE discounted membership for students that provides you access to a wealth of resources at a fraction of the cost of a full membership. This is the easiest way to start building your professional network and stay informed about industry trends.
2. Explore the Developing Economies Program
If you’re a student from a low-income background or a country classified under ASHRAE’s Developing Economies Program, you may qualify for even lower membership fees. This initiative ensures that financial constraints don’t stand in the way of professional growth.
3. Attend Free Technical Events and Student Nights
Many ASHRAE chapters will host free or low-cost events for students, including technical sessions, networking nights, and tours. For example, our chapter held an event last month that was free to students that included a panel event followed by a shop tour the next day.
We encourage students to reach out to their chapter Student Activities chairs and Chapter Presidents and express interest in student-focused technical events. Chapters respond to demand, and your voice can help bring more panels, tours, and networking nights to life.
4. Apply for Scholarships and Grants
ASHRAE offers student scholarships and research grants that can help fund your education and projects. These opportunities not only provide financial support but also strengthen your resume and professional credibility.
5. Access Free Publications and Newsletters
Membership unlocks a variety of publications designed to keep you informed and engaged:
- ASHRAE Journal (monthly)
- ASHRAE Insights (monthly newspaper)
- HVAC&R Industry eNewsletter
- Student Newsletter
These resources deliver technical updates, industry news, and student-focused content.
6. Get Involved with Local Chapter Committees
You don’t need to attend in person to make an impact! Students can contribute remotely by:
- Helping organize virtual or in-person events
- Assisting with chapter website development
- Managing social media posts
- Supporting chapter documentation or outreach
These roles build leadership and organizational skills while giving you visibility in the local HVAC community.
7. Join Technical Committees
One of the most powerful ways to stand out is by joining an ASHRAE Society Technical Committee (TC). Students can participate in (or just shadow) discussions that shape standards and guidelines—an impressive addition to any resume.
Here are a few high-impact committees:
- TC 2.8 – Building Environmental Impacts and Sustainability: Key for energy efficiency and green building practices.
- TC 4.1 – Load Calculation Data and Procedures: Critical for HVAC design fundamentals.
- TC 6.7 – Solar Energy Utilization: Perfect for those interested in renewable energy integration.
- Standards Committees (e.g., 90.1 Energy Standard for Buildings): These influence building codes and energy compliance worldwide.
Getting involved in these committees shows initiative, technical depth, and leadership.
Your Next Step
Start small: sign up for a student membership, subscribe to the newsletters, and keep an eye out for free events and scholarship opportunities. ASHRAE is more than an organization—it’s a community ready to support your journey into HVAC and building systems.
